Equilibrium Swelling of Thermo-Responsive Gels in Mixtures of Solvents

چکیده
Thermo-responsive (TR) gels of the LCST (lower critical solution temperature) type swell in water at temperatures below their volume phase transition temperature Tc and collapse above temperature. When is partially replaced with an organic liquid, these materials demonstrate three different types equilibrium solvent uptake diagrams below, above, close vicinity Tc. A model developed for swelling TR binary mixtures solvents. It takes into account transitions driven by (i) aggregation hydrophobic side groups clusters from which molecules are expelled, (ii) replacement cosolvent cage-like structures surrounding groups, (iii) as main element hydration shells around backbone chains. The involves a relatively small number material constants that found matching observations on covalently cross-linked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) macroscopic microgels. Good agreement demonstrated between experimental data results numerical analysis. Classification provided points diagrams.

Benzyl methacrylate (BzMA) is polymerized using a poly(lauryl methacrylate) macromolecular chain transfer agent (PLMA macro-CTA) using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization at 70 °C in n-dodecane. This choice of solvent leads to an efficient dispersion polymerization, with polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) occurring via the growing PBzMA block to produ...

Mechanical instabilities such as buckling, wrinkling, creasing, and folding are commonplace in both natural and synthetic systems over a wide range of length scales. In this study, we focus on the spontaneous folding behavior of the highly swellable confined nanoscale (thickness below 100 nm) gel films resulting in the formation of a network of regularly folded structures spontaneously emerging...

Abstract. We develop a general theory of the swelling kinetics of polymer gels, with the view that a polymer gel is a two-phase fluid. The model we propose is a free boundary problem and can be used to understand both contraction and swelling, including complete dissolving or dehydration of polymeric gels. We show that the equations of motion satisfy a minimum energy dissipation rate principle ...

Swelling and collapse of polyelectrolyte gels in equilibrium with monovalent and divalent electrolyte solutions.
The swelling of polyelectrolyte (PE) gels by 1:1 and 2:1 salts is studied via osmotic ensemble Monte Carlo simulations at constant osmotic pressure and electrolyte chemical potential of a reservoir phase in equilibrium with a model PE network. Large molecular weight gels exhibit a remarkable swelling response to small changes in 2:1 salt concentration. Gel collapse is accompanied by the formati...
